The lodge history begins in January 1868 when the Grand Master John Rowell gave a dispensation to James Ayer, George C. Gordon, John R. Wheeler, Benjamin R. Wheeler and others. The dispensation allowed them to assemble, form and open a lodge of Masons which would become known as "Spicket Lodge."
The first known meeting was held on January 8th, 1868 in Salem Town Hall.
The first entry in the treasurer's records was on March 7th, 1868. It was for the Bible which was used in the old Temple and then was also used in the dedication of the new Temple.
On the third day of September 1868, Spicket Lodge No. 85, Free and Accepted Masons, was regularly consecrated by Deputy Grand Master Stanley, under the direction of Most Worshipful Grand Master Alexander M. Winn, who was present with a delegation of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the State of New Hampshire.
